Important update on overseas volunteering

Thank you for visiting Tearfund Go and for your interest in our work.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on overseas travel. This led us to cancelling our volunteering placements for the majority of 2020. As a result, we have been reviewing the future of overseas volunteering at Tearfund and have had to make some difficult decisions regarding our programmes.

After 40 years of overseas volunteering trips, we are sorry to announce that we are bringing this work to an end. We will therefore be cancelling all of our future placements.

This has not been an easy decision to make, and we recognise the enormous value that overseas volunteering has brought to those who have participated – volunteers, partners and communities.

There were a number of factors involved in making this decision, one of which is the impact of coronavirus on overseas travel. There are also increasing concerns that a model of short-term volunteering no longer fits with Tearfund’s goal of empowering communities to develop their own solutions to poverty.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the volunteers who have been on these life-changing trips.

Our commitment to follow Jesus’ lead in working to end poverty and injustice remains as strong as ever. You can find more ways to get involved with our work here. If you would like to speak with a member of the Tearfund Go team, please email us at go@tearfund.org.

Emma Stonehouse

'As a retired scientist and medical secretary, spending two weeks volunteering overseas was the perfect opportunity for me with my wife Christine. From learning how to farm God's way, to visiting slum communities and running craft activities with children, it was an experience we'll never forget.'

George Hill

'Volunteering as a family made it very special, and UHDP took great care of us. They believe that exposing children and young people to development work sows vital seeds for the future.'
