Pakistan’s people are still suffering from the effects of the disastrous flooding in August 2022 and this year’s monsoon season has already brought more flooding and loss in the country. UN officials have warned that more than 10 million people, including children, living in flood-affected areas still do not have access to safe drinking water. The prolonged lack of safe drinking water will increase the risk of widespread waterborne diseases. Pray this week for protection from disease and for people to have the resources to rebuild their lives.

Sunday 30 July

Millions of children are living next to stagnant and contaminated water. Tearfund’s local partners are providing people with soap and clean water, as well as sharing vital messaging on how they can protect themselves from diseases. Pray that God will protect people from diseases and bring healing for those who are sick and cannot afford healthcare.

Monday 31 July

‘I thank God my family is safe and we all are back at home,’ shares Hari, a mother of nine, who spent two and a half months living in a tent on the roadside after her house was flooded. Hari, and many others, will be rebuilding their homes in the summer once the weather is better. Pray that these homes will be rebuilt quickly and for that they will be places of safety and joy.

Tuesday 1 August

In just four months last year, Tearfund and our local partners – including the church – were able to support more than 70,000 people who had been affected by the flooding. Thank God for the generosity of people who gave to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal, which enabled this work. Pray that everyone who received this support feels God’s love for them.

Wednesday 2 August

The floods wiped out many of the country’s crops. In line with rising inflation, food prices have increased and many people who were pushed into poverty by the floods cannot afford to eat. Pray for provision of nourishing food. Pray for the success of Tearfund’s crop and seed distributions and that the harvests from these will provide an income to people in need.

Thursday 3 August

Disasters, like these floods, are becoming more frequent and severe and are hitting people living in poverty the hardest. ‘How many more disasters must happen before wealthier nations keep their promise to lower-income countries to help them adapt to the climate crisis?’ asks Jonathan Johnson, Tearfund Country Director in Pakistan. Pray that wealthier nations will honour their climate finance and net zero pledges.

Friday 4 August

Tearfund is working with the Diocese of Hyderabad and the Diocese of Peshawar to support communities. Church leaders and churchgoers have been affected by the flooding but remain committed to helping others. Thank God for how the church has been salt and light, and pray for wisdom for church leaders in how they can continue to help communities recover.

Saturday 5 August

Oh God, ‘You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat’ (Isaiah 25:4). Stay close to the people of Pakistan in their time of need. Bring them comfort and hope as they rebuild their lives. May your church hear their calls for provision and refuge and be ready to respond in the most practical ways. Amen.
