In many parts of the world, discrimination and intolerance lead to religious violence. This has a devastating impact on communities, especially people living in poverty. This week, we’re bringing you highlights from Tearfund’s Footsteps magazine, which gives practical solutions to people helping to solve some of the problems of poverty and powerlessness.
Sunday 4 August
The Joint Initiative for Strategic Religious Action (JISRA) promotes peaceful and just societies by encouraging freedom of religion and belief. JISRA is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and coordinated by four international peacebuilding organisations including Tearfund UK and Tearfund Netherlands. This partnership of 50 civil society organisations across seven countries fosters peaceful communities by promoting freedom of religion. Thank God for these connections of passionate, peace-minded individuals.
Monday 5 August
JISRA encourages community dialogue where people from different faiths have honest conversations, identify common problems and find solutions. Pray that God will be at the heart of these conversations and give them the humility to address these problems.
Tuesday 6 August
Yordanos Asnake, a Christian in Ethiopia, says, ‘The workshops [with JISRA] changed my understanding of the Islamic religion, and dramatically improved my relationships with Muslims. I now understand more about the contribution of all faiths to peaceful coexistence in our community.’ Pray that Yordanos would inspire others to work for peace.
Wednesday 7 August
JISRA involves young people in peacebuilding processes with activities like sporting events, where young people from different faiths can make friends, discuss their beliefs, share their challenges and identify ways to live peacefully together. Pray that young people’s voices in conflict-ridden regions will be lifted up and heard by those in power.
Thursday 8 August
Long-lasting peace cannot be achieved without women. But gender inequality in families and communities often makes it difficult for women to become fully involved in peacebuilding. Thank God for the diversity of his creation by creating male and female in his image, and pray that women will be valued for the crucial role they play in peacebuilding.
Friday 9 August
Interfaith dialogue between faith leaders helps to build trust and enhance religious tolerance and understanding. Pray in particular for faith leaders across the Middle East region – for unity, connection and mutual understanding so that they can help bring people together and make a way for peace.
Saturday 10 August
Prince of Peace, let hearts inflamed with hatred be softened by your love. Help people entrenched in conflict listen to the voices of their neighbours and help them see beyond their differences. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
