This year, Syria enters its 12th year of conflict. It’s one of the most complex and tragic humanitarian situations in the world. This week, pray for Tearfund and our partners’ work in the country, supporting Syrians to meet their basic needs.

Sunday 23 June

There are an estimated 13.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in Syria. The cost of food and other essentials has risen by more than 200 per cent since the beginning of 2020, leaving millions of people struggling to survive. Pray for an end to the conflict so that the suffering will ease.

Monday 24 June

Ahmad*, now aged 15, looked up to his older brother, who died fighting in Aleppo in 2014. Ahmad saw his dead body and was traumatised. He attended counselling sessions at the Tearfund-supported partner centre. Give thanks that he says, ‘These helped me feel so much better and I am very happy with the way I am right now.’

Tuesday 25 June

Rima, a Syrian medical student, felt she’d lost hope. She started having panic attacks, was hospitalised and felt unable to continue her education. After attending counselling sessions at our partner’s centre, her outlook improved and she’s returned to her studies. Pray for emotional healing for people like Rima trying to live amid conflict.

Wednesday 26 June

Renad, age 17, who has autism, loves to learn and play the guitar. But she has had a difficult life. Renad was badly bullied at school. The team at the Tearfund-supported partner centre encouraged her to take up the instrument, which is helping her cope with life in Syria. Pray that the centre will be a refuge for more young people.

Thursday 27 June

Jude lost her two sons and suffers from severe grief and isolation. The Tearfund-supported partner centre gave her support and encouraged her to express her fears, thoughts and feelings. Pray for mothers like Jude who have lost children, that God would comfort them and surround them with people to provide support.

Friday 28 June

‘I feel like here I am accepted as a human being regardless of my religious or educational background,’ says Raghad, who took part in craft and sewing classes at the Tearfund-supported partner centre. Give thanks that the centre is a welcome home for all, and a safe place for people to learn and grow.

Saturday 29 June

‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.’ (2 Corinthians 1:3)

Thank you, Father, that you are the God of all comfort and that you draw near to people in their times of greatest need. Help our partners who are bringing your compassion to people in Syria. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
