The devastating earthquakes that hit in February this year exacerbated the suffering people in Syria have endured for many years because of conflict. Damaged infrastructure, an overburdened healthcare system and limited resources made rescue and relief efforts extremely difficult. This week, pray for the ongoing recovery in Syria and for long-term solutions to the country’s many challenges.
Sunday 8 October
Tearfund’s local church partners have been at the forefront of providing emergency help in Aleppo. They know the needs of the community, as they’ve been faithfully serving people here for years. Pray for a swift recovery, rebuilding and healing in the areas affected by the earthquakes, as well as for provision, protection and determination for all those involved in relief efforts.
Monday 9 October
The highest death toll from the earthquakes was in urban areas, where many people live in multistory blocks of flats. Buildings were not sufficiently earthquake resistant and many structures had already been weakened from conflict. Pray that, as they reconstruct, the buildings will be designed to be earthquake resistant to save lives in the future.
Tuesday 10 October
Pray for an end to the conflict and unrest in Syria, now in its 13th year, which made relief efforts more challenging after the earthquakes. Ask God to work in the hearts and minds of those in power so that they can make wise decisions for the wellbeing of all people. Pray for people’s strength to persevere through this challenging time and for the resilience to endure hardships with faith and hope.
Wednesday 11 October
The prolonged conflict has led to extensive damage to key infrastructure, such as schools, hospitals, water networks and electricity grids. Many people struggle to access basic services, including healthcare, education, clean water and stable electricity. Ask God to unite leaders, organisations and communities to work together in peace to rebuild infrastructure and services.
Thursday 12 October
In many areas, the church played a key role in providing humanitarian assistance and support to the broader community after the earthquakes. Some churches established programmes and partnerships with charities to address urgent needs, such as food, shelter, clothing and medical assistance. Give thanks for the church in Syria which is still demonstrating the love of Jesus in extremely difficult conditions.
Friday 13 October
Tearfund’s work in Syria seeks to support the Syrian church, local organisations and communities to restore relationships, improve wellbeing and reduce poverty. Pray for the safety of Tearfund staff, volunteers and local partners as they work in challenging and sometimes volatile environments. Ask God to protect them physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Saturday 14 October
‘Is it possible that a few minutes have brought us so much pain?’ says a pastor from the Syriac Orthodox Church. The earthquakes were a traumatic experience for many who were already suffering following years of conflict. Pray for Tearfund's projects that, alongside addressing the physical needs of the communities they serve, they will also provide emotional and spiritual support.
