Tearfund’s policy work gets to the heart of the systemic issues that cause poverty, directly supporting our programmes with local churches and communities. We believe that by addressing these root causes we can create a world where people can lift themselves out of poverty and fulfil their God-given potential.
Sunday 1 June
Some governments are paying more attention to so-called ‘forgotten crises’, but aid funding has continued to decline. Tearfund advocates for the role of local partners in crises – particularly faith organisations and churches. Give thanks to God for the invaluable contributions of local churches during humanitarian crises.
Monday 2 June
The Fair Circularity Initiative – that Tearfund convened and is a part of – connects large corporations, such as the Coca-Cola Company, with millions of waste pickers who play a crucial part in global recycling. Pray that this work will ensure that the human rights of workers within the informal waste sector are respected and their critical role in circular value chains is recognised.
Tuesday 3 June
Throughout this month, women and young peace actors will be speaking and participating in global advocacy events with parliamentarians and policymakers. Pray for them as they prepare, that their voices are heard and that leaders take action for sustainable and inclusive peace processes.
Wednesday 4 June
Plastic waste has doubled since 2000, affecting 2 billion people without waste management. Around 20 million waste pickers worldwide collect, sort and recycle plastic. But we need a global treaty to address plastic’s full lifecycle. Pray for the agreement and implementation of a legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution.
Thursday 5 June
The climate crisis is one of the most challenging issues of our time, with devastating impacts on communities living in poverty. On this World Environment Day, please pray that we all take the threat of climate breakdown seriously, calling on leaders to take urgent action and work together to protect God’s creation.
Friday 6 June
In 2024, more than 5,000 Christians were killed for their faith. Many conflicts are fuelled by religious differences, and attacks on faith communities are increasing. Pray that our work with the Joint Initiative for Strategic Religious Action builds bridges, fosters interfaith understanding and encourages governments to prioritise the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief in fragile states.
Saturday 7 June
Small-scale farmers produce one-third of the world’s food but are struggling to adapt to climate breakdown – a situation beyond their control but directly affecting their livelihoods. Pray that climate finance will be unlocked to ensure small-scale farmers in climate-vulnerable countries have the resources to adapt and feed their communities. Ask that the scale-up project for the new local churches and the training sessions will be successful.
