Many Christians will be taking part in The Climate Coalition’s Great Big Green Week. We join them to answer God’s call to care for creation and love our global neighbours. This week, lift up the hundreds of events, from litter picks to letter writing, green fairs to church services, focusing on tackling climate change and celebrating creation.

Sunday 9 June

‘The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.’ (Psalm 24:1)

Inspired by that verse, give thanks to the Lord of the earth and his gifts to us through creation.

Monday 10 June

Pray for all those taking part in Great Big Green Week (www.greatbiggreenweek.com). Pray that they will know joy in celebrating the gifts of creation and experience God’s favour in protecting the natural world. Perhaps you could search online to see if there are any events in your community to pray for and attend.

Tuesday 11 June

Thousands of churches in the UK have already gained an Eco-Church or Eco-Congregation award, making caring for creation an integral part of following God faithfully. Pray for churches you know to grow and flourish in this area of discipleship and witness.

Wednesday 12 June

Pastor Traore leads a church in Burkina Faso where they are noticing the negative impacts of the climate crisis, including rivers drying up and people going hungry due to crop failure. He’s leading Bible studies to help his congregation understand our response as Christians. ‘We have to be the ones to protect the environment,’ he says. ‘Even if the world ends tomorrow, I want to plant a tree today.’ Pray a blessing on Pastor Traore and his church.

Thursday 13 June

This year will see more than 50 countries, representing just under half the world’s population, elect their governments. As people go to the polls, it’s an opportunity to tell our leaders about the world we want to see, asking them to tackle climate change, injustice and poverty. Pray for these elections, that they will be marked peacefully and that, in 2024, servant leaders will be elected who work for the good of all.

Friday 14 June

When people come together to advocate for change, they can make a positive difference. Renew our World Peru is a coalition working with the church on environmental issues. Collaborating with others, they helped persuade the Peruvian government to pass a climate change law that was the first of its kind in Latin America. Pray for Christians everywhere who are speaking up and working with others to make our world fairer and more sustainable.

Saturday 15 June

Loving God, thank you for all of those who are working to care for creation and to help people most impacted by climate change. Inspire and strengthen them today. Amen.
