About a third of Pakistan’s population relies on farming crops as their primary source of income. But this is growing increasingly difficult in the disaster-prone nation that is severely affected by climate change. This week, pray for vulnerable families in Pakistan facing many challenges.
Sunday 23rd February
In 2022, the worst monsoon floods in over a decade wiped out everything Rehman owned. Thankfully his family survived, but they lost their crops, cattle and house. Lord, we pray today for families like Rehman’s, facing huge hardship and waiting months for the water to recede so they can plant seeds again. Amen.
Monday 24th February
Rehman received seeds, fertiliser and new tools from Tearfund’s partner in Pakistan. After surviving on so little, Rehman is working hard to give his family a bright future. Spend a moment thanking God for sustaining Rehman and his family through the most difficult times.
Tuesday 25th February
Rehana’s disabled six-year-old son sits on her lap and watches the other children play. With only one leg, he is unable to run around. Rehana embroiders dresses and her husband earns daily wages from hard labour, but together the couple do not earn enough to pay for their son’s treatment and protein food. Lord, we lift this family to you and many others like them, struggling to provide for basic needs. Amen.
Wednesday 26th February
Praise God that through Rehana’s self-help group, Tearfund’s partner in Pakistan has provided her family with two goats. Now with the opportunity to breed and sell goats, Rehana will be able to afford the supplements and proteins that her son needs.
Thursday 27th February
Every time it rained, Shila and her family would worry. Would their house withstand a flood? Praise God that Shila no longer has this fear hanging over her. Tearfund’s partner in Pakistan provided Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) training and helped her community develop a DRR plan. Today, Shila’s house is 60 per cent stronger.
Friday 28th February
A seed bank that can hold up to 30 bags of wheat has helped Shafiq and his family recover from the 2022 monsoon floods. ‘Now we will be able to keep much more grain for eating and harvesting,’ says Shafiq. After losing everything in the floods, including his beloved wife, Shafiq is bravely focusing on providing for his children and grandchildren. Lord, please continue to walk beside Shafiq and others like him, who lost loved ones during the torrential downpour. Amen.
Saturday 1st March
Alongside the 2022 floods that affected most of Pakistan, parts of the country have been flooded every year since 2019. Pray for communities affected by these regular floods and for Tearfund partners and the teams in the country who respond when disasters strike.
