Nepal remains the least developed and one of the poorest countries in Asia. Tearfund has been working in Nepal since the 1970s and is currently partnering with seven organisations across the country. This week, lift up the people of Nepal in prayer.
Sunday 29 December
Nepal contains most of the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world. In Psalm 121:1–2 it says, ‘I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.’ Thank you, Lord, that we can lift all our prayers and petitions to you. Amen.
Monday 30 December
One of Tearfund’s partners in Nepal delivers leadership training, financial management training and climate change awareness around disaster management to help communities prepare for disasters. Sushmita Pariyar, who attended the class said, ‘The programme has given us important information. In this workshop, we learnt how to save money.’ Pray that the work will reach more people like Sushmita.
Tuesday 31 December
A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Jajarkot region of Nepal on 3 November 2023. Dhanu and two of her children were dug out of the rubble and flown to safety by helicopter. But she lost her husband and one of her daughters. ‘I cry and can share my feelings,’ says Dhanu, ‘but my little boy can’t even call out for his dad. We are totally helpless and hopeless.’ God knows the pain in our hearts. He sees every tear. Let us pray today for Dhanu and families who lost loved ones on that day.
Wednesday 1 January
In the aftermath of the earthquake, Tearfund’s partner in Nepal distributed emergency relief packages with food and other essential items to help meet the urgent needs of 450 families who lost their homes. Praise God that Dhanu and her family were among those to receive help and support through the cold winter.
Thursday 2 January
Across Nepal, Tearfund partners have been training church leaders through Tearfund’s Transforming Communities programme. Pray that more church leaders will take the Bible studies back to their congregations and use the biblical principles to bring long-term solutions to communities’ problems.
Friday 3 January
Spend some time today praying for the Christian networks, organisations and local churches across Nepal. Pray for fresh energy, new vision and God’s strength to persevere in the face of increasing hardships and need.
Saturday 4 January
Take a moment of quiet. Ask God to bring to mind anything you’ve read this week about Nepal. Invite God to show you how to pray today for his people and lift up Tearfund partners as they face multiple challenges in Nepal, particularly responding to emergencies.
