About one in five people in Latin America and the Caribbean live in poverty. It's one of the most unequal regions in the world, with the top 10 per cent of earners making 12 times more than the bottom 10 per cent. This week, lift up rural and indigenous people, who have much lower incomes than the rest of the population, and give thanks for Juan, who was freed from prison 30 years ago after a Tearfund campaign.

Sunday 27 April

Brazil is a country prone to natural disasters, which have led to widespread destruction and many deaths. Let us pray for effective collaboration among the community, authorities and churches to support the affected and grieving families.

Monday 28 April

Criminal violence and drug-related terrorism in Latin America have caused a humanitarian crisis. In Urabá, Colombia, pastors and churches are providing support to thousands affected by violence. Pray for the protection of church leadership and the Tearfund team working in the area, influencing the church to be a centre for community transformation.

Tuesday 29 April

Latin America is experiencing a large exodus of people seeking better living conditions. In 2023, over 600,000 crossed the Darién Gap, the border between Colombia and Panama. Pray that God grants wisdom to national leaders to be sensitive to these issues and strength to churches to support and advocate for migrants.

Wednesday 30 April

Uncertainty and instability persist in Venezuela following the presidential elections in July last year, as the population suspects fraud. Pray for peace and that the election results will be honoured to allow a smooth transition to prevent a further humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

Thursday 1 May

Juan was a Christian taxi driver in Lima, Peru. In 1993 he was arrested as a suspected terrorist by the police. He was entirely innocent. Tearfund campaigned for his release, including asking supporters to pray and write letters, and Juan was later freed. Give thanks that, 30 years later, Juan is continuing to dedicate his life to helping people living in poverty in Lima.

Friday 2 May

Last September, Juan and his wife Cristina visited the UK to thank the people who supported them during his imprisonment. 'It's a real pleasure to be here with you at Tearfund 30 years later,' Cristina said. 'To be able to, finally, say thank you.' Ask God if there is someone you can send a message of thanks to today.

Saturday 3 May

'I am working with children from the most deprived areas of Lima,' Juan says. 'That is my work right now. I would like people to pray for this work so I can help more families.' Lord, we thank you for Juan who has suffered so much but is still serving you and people living in poverty. Bless the work of his hands. Amen.
