Weak governance and the exclusion of certain communities in East and Central Africa have allowed armed groups to seize territory, fuelling violence and mistrust. This week, pray for families struggling with hunger and poverty and for Tearfund’s peacebuilding work.

Sunday 11 May

Pray for our staff, who often work in unstable environments far from their homes and families, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and the Central African Republic. Pray for their wellbeing, protection and safety and for comfort and strength as they follow Jesus where the need is greatest.

Monday 12 May

Burundi has a large population living in poverty, affected by food insecurity, rising inflation and the climate crisis. Heavy rains have caused flooding, raising the level of Lake Tanganyika and destroying homes. Pray for more funding for our programmes so we can respond to those in vulnerable situations. Pray for stability and livelihood opportunities.

Tuesday 13 May

Violence, conflicts, population movements and natural disasters continue to put the Central African Republic in need of humanitarian assistance. Last year, Tearfund opened a base in Basse-Kotto. The region is very remote and reaching communities that lack essential services is extremely difficult. Pray for the protection of our staff and for provision so we can reach people in greatest need.

Wednesday 14 May

Eastern DRC faces a dire humanitarian situation, with millions internally displaced because of conflict and high levels of food insecurity and disease. Pray for the safety of our teams and the communities we serve. Pray for peace and solutions to end the conflicts and for comfort and provision for those affected.

Thursday 15 May

Ethiopia faces crises, conflicts and the effects of climate change. Heavy rains in South Ethiopia last year resulted in deaths and displacement. An estimated 21.4 million people need aid, including 4.5 million displaced from their communities. Pray for an end to political instability, for peace and unity so Ethiopians can come together to develop their country.

Friday 16 May

Climate change affects the safety and livelihoods of many in Rwanda. Heavy rains affect agricultural production and the economy. Last year, rains caused floods and landslides, killing 131 people and damaging crops. Communities need support to adapt to climate change. Pray for funding, stable weather and good food production.

Saturday 17 May

South Sudan faces a humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced by conflict and needing support. The country is mired in a complex emergency that has destroyed livelihoods and forced millions to the brink of starvation. Pray for lasting peace and solutions to manage climate change consequences. Pray for livelihood opportunities to overcome poverty.
