Last year, Tearfund’s Time to Deliver campaign called on the UK Government to influence other wealthy nations to keep their promises and collectively deliver $100 billion a year in climate finance to low-income countries. This money will help to reimburse people living in poverty for costs from climate change.
Earlier this month, we learned that the UK may possibly be climbing down on its own promise to commit £11.6 billion to that overall total, but after a rapid joint petition the Government has promised that it will set out its plan in September on how it will deliver the finance. It’s time to pray that the Government keeps this promise too!
Sunday 23 July
More than 60,000 people have already signed the rapid joint petition calling on the Prime Minister to keep his climate finance promises. Give thanks for this groundswell of support and ask that many more will sign and that the UK Government will continue to feel pressure and that they will act.
Monday 24 July
If the promised finance reached communities bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, it would equip millions of people living in poverty to build a better future for themselves. Pray that high-income countries will accept their responsibilities and pay what they promised.
Tuesday 25 July
Although the annual COP climate conferences have not yet delivered all the promised finance, countries across the world agreed last November to establish a ‘loss and damage’ fund. This is for impacts that have already happened or can’t be avoided, such as sea-level rises. Give thanks for this breakthrough and ask that this will soon be turned into reality.
Wednesday 26 July
‘The island my father lives on is already underwater because of sea-level rise due to climate change,’ says Jocabed, a climate activist from Panama. For people like Jocabed, the impact of climate change is frightening. Ask God to comfort those who have already lost so much and who fear for the future.
Thursday 27 July
Although the details are yet to be worked out, the inclusion of the ‘loss and damage’ fund offers a ray of hope and relief for vulnerable nations and communities. Give thanks that the voices of people like Jocabed are finally being heard, and ask that countries will come together to establish and pledge money to the fund.
Friday 28 July
Please join us in continuing to pray that the UK Government will keep its promise to deliver £11.6 billion in climate finance by 2026, as part of the collective $100 billion pledge, and that in September it will publish plans that show how it will do so. Pray that God will move in mighty and miraculous ways to make this happen.
Saturday 29 July
‘We will not stop praying, taking action and speaking up – holding our leaders to account for keeping their promises and urging wealthier nations to step up,’ says Jane Boswell, from Tearfund’s campaigns team. ‘We will continue to choose hope, keeping our eyes fixed on God.’ Make this your pledge in prayer today.
