More than 36 million people have been affected by the worst droughts southern and eastern Africa has seen in 40 years. Local conflict, combined with skyrocketing food prices, is making the situation worse. Let us stand together this week in prayer for the many communities suffering.
Sunday 16th February
Mozambique faces acute food insecurity, with 2.7 million people affected. More than 600,000 have returned home and need assistance, along with 500,000 in resettlement areas. Pray that those affected by conflict and drought will get resilience training, and for the safety of Tearfund staff and partners.
Monday 17th February
Following attacks from non-state armed groups in Mozambique earlier this year, more than 80,000 people were forced to leave their homes. With concerns about a cholera outbreak, Tearfund's partners provided water purifiers and soap to families, along with menstruation kits for women and girls. Lord, may they know you are close to them at this time. Amen.
Tuesday 18th February
Zambia is experiencing a humanitarian crisis due to El Niño-induced drought, affecting 1 million households and preventing electricity generation. Pray for the provision of essential resources to meet urgent humanitarian needs and for wisdom and guidance for leaders as they seek alternative energy solutions to address the power shortages.
Wednesday 19th February
Last year was a difficult time for Kenya. There were widespread protests and demonstrations against a proposed finance bill, and later, a scare of an mpox outbreak. Pray for peace to prevail in the country and for prevention and healing from mpox.
Thursday 20th February
Pray for the individuals and families affected by the garbage dump landslide in the suburbs of Kampala, Uganda's capital, last August. At least 21 people died and homes, families and livestock were engulfed in mountains of rubbish at the dump in Kiteezi after a collapse caused by heavy rainfall. Pray for the survivors to be supported and humanely homed.
Friday 21st February
Many families in Karamoja, Uganda would usually provide their food by farming. But because of conflict and climate change, they now rely on markets. However, they often don't have enough money and there are very few alternative opportunities to earn an income. Ask God to grant Tearfund, the local church and our local partner the resources and ability to continue supporting the most vulnerable households in Karamoja.
Saturday 22nd February
Dear God, we lift southern and eastern Africa to you. Father God, you are there in the midst of the pain and suffering. Lord, we pray for protection over those facing conflict. And we pray for practical support for those facing hunger and thirst. Thank you for our hope in you and the reminder that you are always with us. Amen.
