There is currently an urgent food crisis across East Africa – an area that covers South Sudan and Somaliland, along with parts of Kenya and Ethiopia. Currently 19 million people are in urgent need of food and safe water.
Tearfund launched an emergency appeal for the region in March 2017 as part of the Disasters Emergency Committee. We are working to meet immediate humanitarian needs across the region. We are providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene services, food assistance and cash grants to those badly affected by the current drought. In addition, we are supporting families with seeds and tools, enabling them to plant crops for harvesting.
We will continue to provide emergency assistance. However, we will also be working with communities to help them build their resilience to any future disasters – helping to recover agricultural and pastoral livelihoods.
The generous support of Tearfund supporters in the last six months has meant that many men, women and children have escaped starvation. However, the situation remains critical in many areas and the level of need has increased.
Please give and pray now for people suffering in East Africa.
