We all long for home. Somewhere we can belong, feel safe and grow. Yet across the Middle East, millions of people’s lives have been shattered by conflict. They are forced to raise their families in overcrowded camps, flee to another country, or rebuild their lives in a house that’s been reduced to rubble. Families are doing all of this lacking the basic essentials they need to survive, and now with the urgent threat of coronavirus.

Fadi* is only ten. Yet he’s lived through more horrors than many people see over a lifetime. He lost his leg during the Iraq conflict. Fadi’s little sister, Noor*, is a brave survivor too. She lost an eye in the same explosion.

They now live in a crowded temporary camp with their mother and their aunt, Sara*. Life is hard in the camps – especially with the children’s additional needs. Their mother was too traumatised to speak to us, but Sara shared what had happened.

‘I have no hope for the future,’ Sara said. ‘We live in this camp, where we have no home, no money and no identity cards.’
Fadi is one of 79.5 million people worldwide who have been forced from their homes¹. The coronavirus pandemic and overcrowded conditions of the camp make him and his family even more vulnerable.
