Tearfund receives prestigious new award for quality

Tearfund is one of the first agencies to receive a prestigious new award for the quality of its work in responding to disasters. The Core Humanitarian Standard certificate, awarded by Geneva-based Humanitarian Quality Assurance Initiative (HQAI), was awarded to the charity after a rigorous inspection process.

The certification gives independent assurance of the quality of Tearfund’s work in responding to global disasters.

David Bainbridge, Tearfund International Director, said: "We are delighted that Tearfund has received CHS certification. Quality and accountability are very important to us at Tearfund and the process to achieve certification has been enormously helpful, building on our culture of learning and continual improvement in the way we respond to disasters and humanitarian challenges. We now have a clear understanding of where systems, policies and practices are strong and effective, and where further improvements are needed.”

HQAI was set up in December 2015 to provide independent quality assurance to the global development sector and helps organisations by reviewing, on request, their effectiveness in applying recognised standards and good practices. The reviews focus on policies as well as practices and incorporate feedback from local stakeholders including people affected by crisis.

Pierre Hauselmann, HQAI’s Executive Director, said, “This is one of the first certificates we have awarded and represents a major step in the roll out of HQAI’s work. Tearfund is one of the organisations that have pioneered our quality assurance services and contributed to the creation of a mechanism that enables the sector to demonstrate transparency in its practices, and supports continuous learning and improvement.”
