'Malawi must not be next’ warns charity after East Africa appeal
Relief and development agency Tearfund has called on the public to act now to curb Malawi’s hunger crisis and help millions facing similar situations. The warning comes as East Africa stands on the brink of famine, and one in nine people globally (795 million) are undernourished. Malawi is suffering a food crisis with 6.5million people struggling to survive - almost 40 per cent of the population.

The UN has today formally declared a famine in parts of South Sudan, the world’s newest country, and the situation is set to worsen as food stocks become depleted. More than three years of conflict combined with the continued devaluation of the South Sudanese Pound, acute malnutrition, difficulties in transporting aid, and below average harvests, have brought about this scenario.
Tearfund says hundreds of thousands now extremely vulnerable as Tropical Storm Dineo ravages Mozambique
The tropical storm which hit Mozambique on Wednesday 15 February will have a long-term impact on thousands of families across the region, according to Tearfund. Tropical storm Dineo swept across the southern coast of the country, severely damaging 20,000 homes and displacing 140,000 people. Currently seven people have lost their lives as a result of the storm, with high winds and heavy rainfall destroying houses, schools, ripped up crops and forced thousands to flee their homes.

The UN has launched a $2.1bn appeal for Yemen, predicting that 12 million people are on the brink of famine. With an estimated 18.8 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, Yemen has been rated as a severe humanitarian crisis, with ever-growing needs identified across all sectors including water and sanitation, food security, and health.
