Yemen

The current situation

Yemen is experiencing the largest humanitarian crisis in the world today. Violent civil war has crippled the country’s water, sanitation and health infrastructures in one of the Arab world’s poorest countries. Thousands of people have died in the conflict, and nearly 70% of the country (18.8 million people) are in now need of humanitarian assistance.

Civilians are the most severely affected by the conflict, as air strikes have repeatedly struck homes, hospitals and public infrastructure that now lies in ruins.

Yemen is on the brink of severe famine, as the conflict has destroyed the ports that import over 90% of Yemen’s food. Blockades put in place due to the conflict make it difficult for humanitarian aid to reach people in desperate need.

How are Tearfund helping?

Tearfund is working to provide conflict-affected families with clean water and hygiene materials to reduce the risk of illness and disease. We are also providing cash for families facing hunger to enable them to buy food from local traders. Seeds and tools are also being distributed to help families plant small family vegetable gardens and a large shipment of medicines and medical supplies is being flown into the capital to be distributed to local hospitals.

Pray for our work in Yemen

  • Pray for peace in Yemen, and that fighting between political groups will end. Pray for an end to the airstrikes that are destroying people’s homes and lives.
  • Pray for the millions of people living in areas that are too dangerous for aid to reach. Ask God that they would receive life-saving support.
  • Pray that they might have the resources and ability to move out of immediate conflict zones.
  • Pray that blockages to aid and restrictions on imports to Yemen will be lifted, so that essential resources and humanitarian aid can get through.
  • Pray for all the people affected by the conflict: people who are injured, have their lost family members, their homes and their livelihoods, for their safety and strength in the face of suffering.
