Scripture Union of Malawi (SUM) is an incredible organisation that seeks to nurture children and youth, strengthen family life and help people engage with God through the Bible so that they may follow Jesus Christ and be instrumental in transforming Malawi.

With the outbreak of the HIV epidemic, SUM has been involved in working with the local community, running programmes to address HIV, life skills and reproductive health education.

SUM’s goal is to promote reproductive health and reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and HIV by raising awareness and encouraging behaviour change.

So, are you ready?

Six months in Malawi will both challenge you personally and stretch your faith. You will experience how the local church is at the heart of tackling poverty and injustice and have the chance to show God’s love in practical ways as you visit and learn from inspirational communities.

Who are we looking for?

Individuals who are flexible and adaptable and would love the chance to spend six months living in Malawi, working as a team, alongside SU staff.

What will you be doing?

  • Encouraging Bible-reading through the production of Bible-reading aids and the distribution of Christian Literature.
  • Running youth camps, youth clubs, Bible clubs and Bible study groups
  • Helping to run training for school-leavers
  • Supporting HIV education programmes
  • Helping with the family ministry programmes

It was such a blessing to work with AGREDS for 5 months going into rural communities, getting involved in 'food security' and 'water and climate justice' projects, building relationships with the villagers and learning about development work. Such a great experience!

Being in Malawi has challenged me spiritually and it has made me look at the world through the way God sees the world. I have, along with my team, seen issues of injustice and poverty and believe that God has put a passion in our hearts, as a team, to want to do something about it.

Tim Perkin

It was a totally amazing experience from beginning to end and it was something that completely changed my perspectives as well as providing plenty of challenges and opportunities.
