Managing money effectively is an important skill for individuals, households and businesses

When there is widespread corruption and a lack of transparency (openness and honesty) in society, democracy suffers, people’s rights are not respected, and the gap between rich and poor widens.

There are many ways this can happen. Politicians might misuse public money for their own benefit. Companies might create unjust and insecure working conditions, or avoid paying taxes.

Organisations such as Transparency International make it clear that in a just and democratic society, individuals and organisations must be able to monitor the use of public funds and hold governments to account for their actions.

Churches, as integral members of society, can play an important role in this. But first, they need to demonstrate transparency, honesty and good financial management themselves.

Fé Cidadã

Across Latin America, many churches are not meeting their legal responsibilities, such as paying taxes. And they do not always stand up for justice and honesty. This often stems from a lack of transparency in how they manage their finances.

In Brazil, a project called Fé Cidadã (Citizen Faith) is working with churches to promote a culture that is transparent and honest. This includes helping churches to make sure they are operating legally, for example by registering correctly with the government, paying taxes, and making meeting spaces accessible for people with disabilities.

Fé Cidadã is also working with young people in schools and churches, encouraging them to act with integrity and get involved in shaping their communities. The positive results and personal stories from these communities are inspiring others to take similar action.

Advocacy

As churches embrace open and honest practices, they can become powerful role models and advocates for change. This includes holding governments to account when they misuse public money, and standing up for the rights of workers, children and young people.

Churches can, and should, serve as public symbols of hope, showing that a dedication to integrity and justice is essential for both spiritual growth and the wellbeing of communities.

Discussion questions

Why is it important for churches to manage their finances honestly and accurately?

What can happen if they do not do this?

Are there examples in your church or community where people or organisations are not acting in an open and honest way? What actions could you or your church take to help change this?
