I am writing to you as your constituent, following reports in July that the UK Government could be set to break its commitment to deliver £11.6 billion in climate finance to vulnerable countries by 2026.

At the same time, the leader of the opposition, Sir Keir Starmer MP, is indicating that the Labour Party could also be hesitating in its support for climate finance.

Failing to fulfil the UK’s climate finance pledge would be devastating for people living in poverty who are experiencing the worst impacts of the climate crisis. It would also be a severe blow to trust in the UNFCCC (COP) negotiations.

The UK Government has since stated that it remains committed to delivering climate finance and that it will publish how it intends to do so. However, indicators show spending must increase significantly to meet the pledge of £11.6 billion before 2026. What’s more, this spending should be new and additional to Overseas Development Assistance, as stipulated by the pledge.

I am writing to you, as my MP, to ask you to do all you can to urge the UK Government to stand by its commitments, in particular to:
- Honour its £11.6 billion pledge in full by 2026
- Urgently publish a detailed plan outlining exactly when and how it will deliver this.

I look forward to hearing from you, and would be grateful if you would raise my concerns with the Ministers and Shadow Ministers responsible for International Development and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Affairs.
