Dear Miatta Fahnbulleh

I’m committed to praying for you and your work as the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero and as you lead the UK delegation at COP31. May you know God’s strength and courage as you speak up on climate issues that affect communities (like mine) as well as our beautiful planet.

As you know, the climate crisis is threatening food security and livelihoods in the UK and around the world. Across lower-income countries, women smallholder farmers like Afroza, Beli and Zainab (pictured) produce 60 to 80 per cent of food. This is an incredible contribution to global food systems, but if these women were resourced the same as men then they could increase yields by 20 to 30 per cent, feeding an additional 100 to 150 million people.

The very people trying to grow our food face extreme risks of hunger themselves. Extreme heat, prolonged droughts and erratic floods are destroying their crops, and a lack of resources means they are struggling to adapt to climate impacts. At the same time, climate change is already driving up grocery prices and impacting food security, placing an additional burden on household budgets here in the UK. The climate crisis is urgent and the transition towards a more sustainable world cannot leave farmers behind. It must be a just transition.

I believe that we all have a duty to show love and care for God’s creation, playing our part in renewing our world so everyone can thrive, especially communities living in extreme poverty. The UK has already demonstrated this duty and care through world-leading ambition in tackling the climate crisis, but promises should be kept and our response must increase as the crisis does.

As world leaders gather in Antalya for COP31, the ‘Super El Niño’ weather event will be devastating communities living in poverty. This will put even more pressure on global food security, as smallholder farmers struggle to adapt to climate change without sufficient climate finance to support them. The UK can play its part by reversing recent cuts to climate finance, and help raise ambition among other governments to ensure there’s enough support for the people who need it most. This finance must also prioritise a just transition away from climate-destructive industrial agriculture, which harms the climate and environment, towards more sustainable and fair food systems for smallholder farmers like Afroza, Beli and Zainab.

Will you stand with farmers and ensure the UK advocates for these issues at COP31? And will you bring that ambition home as you work across government with colleagues at FCDO and DEFRA on this critical issue?
