Dear {MP}

I am deeply concerned by the Prime Minister’s recent decision to cut the UK’s international development budget down to 0.3% of Gross National Income (GNI) - a cut of around £5.5 billion.

The aid budget is invaluable in combatting food insecurity, insufficient healthcare and climate change. This appalling decision is already affecting people living in poverty around the world. Families are going hungry. Children aren’t able to go to school. Conflict is continuing to ruin lives.

This decision is not only harmful but strategically flawed. UK aid strengthens global health and security, making the world a safer place. Cutting overseas aid for communities experiencing instability only exacerbates global insecurity.

The Conservative and Labour Parties both pledged in their 2024 General Election Manifestos to restore development spending to 0.7% of Gross National Income, with Labour specifically promising to ‘regain Britain’s global leadership on development’. This leadership is desperately needed, yet the reduction to 0.3% represents a complete abandonment of those commitments. The UK's aid budget cuts are the most severe of any G7 country. At a time of unprecedented humanitarian suffering, drastically cutting overseas aid is indefensible and short-sighted. It undermines hard won gains and signals a retreat from tackling extreme poverty, climate change, and global insecurity.

By 2030, it is predicted that 22.6 million avoidable deaths will be caused by recent cuts to global aid. (Lancet) As a Christian, I refuse to stay silent in the face of such unfathomable suffering and loss.

As my MP I therefore request that you call on the Government to commit to a roadmap back to 0.7%, in order to uphold the UK’s development leadership, our UN commitment, and the compassion of the British people. The increase in defence spending should be sourced by other means.
