Our work in Yemen

Overview

Yemen is facing the largest humanitarian crisis in the world today. Civil war has crippled the country, creating many challenges for people in their day-to-day lives.

Almost every person in the country has been affected. Thousands have died in the conflict, and millions are without access to sufficient food, safe water or services that protect people from harm.

Climate shocks like floods and droughts have compounded these challenges.

Our work in Yemen

Tearfund began responding to the crisis in Yemen in 2016, working through our network of local partners to provide people with clean water, sanitation, food, and other essential items. We have now expanded our work to provide long-term support for communities particularly affected by the conflict.

We recognise that our response to the situation in Yemen needs to be holistic – taking into account the many ways in which people are affected. It includes:

• Supporting conflict-affected families with accessing clean water and sanitation to reduce the risk of illness and disease.
• Providing vulnerable families with cash and emergency food packages to help prevent severe malnutrition and starvation.
• Distributing farming kits so that families can grow their own food and sell crops for income.
• Increasing the resilience of those who have endured trauma and violence. Through psychosocial support groups and peacebuilding initiatives we support and equip communities with strategies for conflict resolution, managing stress and coping after trauma.
• Strengthening the capacity of our local partners to respond to crises in a way that is sustainable.

Partnerships and funding

Tearfund’s work in Yemen is funded by our supporters, as well as through generous partnerships. This support enables us to reach more people, encourages us to innovate, connects us with other organisations, and allows us to provide both short and long-term support to communities in vulnerable circumstances.
