What’s the problem with fast fashion?

Our society’s addiction to fast fashion is having a devastating effect on the climate and people living in poverty.

According to Fashion on Climate, the fashion industry contributes approximately 2.1 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year – that’s equivalent to four per cent of all global emissions.

Overconsumption is at the heart of the problem. Big brands are producing garments at a rapid pace and it is people living in poverty who are paying the price – like garment workers in Bangladesh, and people in places like Ghana and Chile who are contending with mountains of fashion waste from around the world.

Did you know?

Swap, don’t shop!

By committing to live more sustainably together, we can help bring an end to the fast fashion industry that is doing so much harm to people and creation. There are so many ways that you can slow down consumption, whatever your style or budget.

Instead of shopping for new clothes, why not gather your friends and family and host a clothes swap event? You can also raise money for Tearfund at the same time by asking people to pay a small fee to attend the event. Every penny raised will support people living in poverty and help the most vulnerable communities adapt to the devastating effects of the climate crisis.

We got a handy guide to help you plan and host your very own clothes swap event. Sign up today and we’ll send you everything you need to get started.
