Here is your everything-you-need-to-know-about-hosting-a-big-quiz-night guide

Five simple steps. Let's get quizzing.

Step 1: How to host

It’s super easy to be a host – all you need to do is sign up. With eight exciting, family-friendly rounds, the quiz has already been made for you by Tearfund. You’ll have access to a wealth of fabulous resources that will help make your Big Quiz Night a roaring success. And, you'll also receive emails with useful tips, info and reminders and, of course, oodles of encouragement from us.

Step 2: How to run your online quiz

You’ll need:

  • A laptop, tablet or smartphone.
  • A good internet connection.
  • If technology isn’t your forte, you may wish to find someone who is technologically-minded and can help you.

There are numerous video platforms that you can consider for hosting your quiz night, for example:

  • Zoom
  • Google Meet
  • Skype
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Facebook Live

For more information about running the quiz, please check out our On the Night hints and tips.

Many of these platforms offer a free option, however:

  • Be aware that there may be certain restrictions.
  • It may also be helpful to check with your church to see if they already have a subscription to a particular platform.
  • Feel free to use whichever platform works best for you and your group.

Step 3: How to fundraise

You'll need to set up your own JustGiving page and then spread the word that you’re ready to start receiving donations. Every pound raised from the Big Quiz Night will come straight to Tearfund via JustGiving – you won’t have to do anything.

There are lots of fantastic ways you can fundraise. Feel free to come up with your own inspiring ideas, but here are just a few suggestions from us:

Dig deep

Halfway through the quiz, show the case study film about Alaya and then ask people to donate generously (via your JustGiving page). Alaya – like many others just like her – is the reason why we do what we do.

Phone a friend

If there’s a question that’s really tricky, the quizzer can phone a friend for help. And all for the price of a donation.

The joker card

Quizzers can play this card to double their points on a round of their choice – but they’ll have to donate to use it!

Going once...

How about holding a promise auction? Have your quizzers bid for something that someone has offered to do, for example, drop off a cooked meal, do a food shop etc.

Mix it up

During halftime or while the scores are being counted, add in a talent show, an online craft sale, or even a best garden competition. Perhaps encourage people to donate to enter/vote?

And on the night, don't forget to watch the case study film and share all about Alaya's story – like many others just like her – is the reason why we do what we do.

Step 4: How to use the dashboard

We will have an online dashboard ready on the night where you'll be able to tell us how many people are taking part in your quiz. It’ll also show how many others are taking part across the country. If possible, please log your numbers by 8.30pm so we can add up all the figures. After 8.30pm, you’ll be able to see the totaliser: the total number of people from all across the UK taking part in the quiz!

Step 5: How to donate money raised

Paying in your donations to Tearfund is quick, simple and easy.

  • JustGiving is our preferred method of payment as the platform will process all payments and send the money straight to Tearfund on your behalf.
  • You can pay in your money online via our Big Quiz Night website.
  • Alternatively, you can send in a cheque to Tearfund, 100 Church Road, Teddington TW11 8QE

If you need any help paying in your donations, please email giving@tearfund.org or call 020 3906 3390.

Finally, Thank you.

Thank you for joining us and doing something amazing. Thank you for being a quizzing superhero and helping us smash poverty for good. Your support will enable lives to be transformed all around the world. And, that is pretty incredible.
