Where is Brazil?

Brazil is the largest country in South America

Our impact

Overview

Brazil is listed among the ten most unequal countries in the world. This inequality has worsened due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, an economic crisis, a record rate of unemployment, an increasing number of school dropouts, and a return to the UN hunger map. Meanwhile, the flow of migrants and refugees into Brazil continues, due to economic and political crises in neighbouring countries.

The climate crisis has affected the most vulnerable communities with the increase in periods of drought and floods.

Our work in Brazil

Tearfund has been working in Brazil for over 30 years, predominantly focusing on the most vulnerable communities in the north and northeast regions. We have seen significant growth in the reach of Tearfund's influence through the networks, churches, and movements that we work in partnership with.

We have equipped and resourced local churches and communities to address social and economic injustice. This has included welcoming migrants and refugees, preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence, combating structural racism, and defending the constitutional rights of indigenous peoples.

In response to the climate and environmental crisis, we are equipping young leaders to understand the biblical mandate to care for creation, advocate for its protection and make practical lifestyle changes.

Please pray for Brazil

    • The challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis seem unrelenting. Ask God to renew Brazilians’ hope and confidence in his justice and care.
    • Pray for those struggling with hunger – for those who do not know what they will eat tomorrow and for parents who can´t provide enough food for their children.
    • Political polarisation has caused huge damage around the country. Unfortunately, the church has not been immune to it. Pray for unity among Christians who hold different political views.
