Seven prayers for the G7

World leaders are meeting in Cornwall this weekend to tackle global crises. Join us in praying for these vital talks.

Alex Baker - Tearfund

This weekend, leaders from among the world’s largest – and most polluting – economies will meet in Cornwall for this year’s ‘Group of Seven’ (G7) summit. They’ll be discussing how to build back better from the pandemic and tackle the biggest global challenges, including the climate crisis that is having such a devastating impact on the world’s poorest countries.

It’s a significant milestone: leaders at this summit could make commitments that tackle the climate crisis as part of their recovery plans and get us on track to a fairer world. And they can influence other leaders and governments to take action. As host nation, the UK has a particularly crucial role in influencing discussions.

These discussions have never been more important. The G7 summit closely follows the publication of a new Tearfund report which shows that – despite promises to ‘build back better’ – these same nations have been pumping more money into fossil fuels than into clean energy since the start of the pandemic. This is out of step with the urgency of the crisis and with the G7’s own net-zero targets. For the UK and other G7 nations, it highlights the tension between ambition and action.

As we contemplate the scale of the crises our world faces, it’s important we keep our eyes fixed on the God of justice. Please join us this week in praying for the G7 summit and for world leaders who have the power to set in motion significant action to tackle the climate crisis and create a greener, fairer future for everyone. Here are some prayers to help guide you:

Monday 7 June: Pray for world leaders

Lord, we pray today for world leaders as they prepare for the G7 this weekend. We pray for Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he hosts the G7 summit, for boldness and conviction to act in truth (1 John 3:18), and for leaders of the other countries attending this year: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, and the United States.

We pray that these governments will enable a green recovery for all and stand in solidarity with low- and middle-income countries through their discussions and decisions. Let all those attending come with a spirit of humility and compassion as plans are made to rebuild after the pandemic.

Amen

Tuesday 8 June: Pray for the Wave of Hope

Father God, we pray for the Wave of Hope today as it is handed in at Westminster ahead of the G7 summit. We thank you for the people across the UK who have joined in to call for a fairer world.
We pray that the Prime Minister and other leaders will hear this call and be moved to make bold decisions towards a better world for all.

Amen

Wednesday 9 June: Pray for creation

A prayer written by Oscar from the Jos Green Centre, Nigeria:

Lord Jesus, we are breaking the world you created, and it’s causing suffering all around us. The poor and vulnerable amongst us feel the most impact. Forgive us where we have ignored their plight. Forgive us for the way we have treated creation. Today, we set our hearts and minds on you. Give us your vision to inspire us to live more justly in order to bring your restoration to this earth.

Amen

Thursday 10 June: Pray for the G7 interfaith event

Lord God, we pray for the interfaith event happening tonight in Truro Cathedral. We thank you that people of faith around the world can come together to end poverty and injustice, and care for our common home. May the event be a powerful witness to world leaders, a day before the G7 summit begins. We pray a blessing over those speaking, those joining in Cornwall, and those joining the livestream online.

Amen

Friday 11 June: Pray for the G7 summit

‘Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honours God.’ (Proverbs 14:31)

Father God, we pray for the G7 Leaders’ Summit as it begins today. We pray for humility and compassion in discussions about tackling the biggest global challenges. We pray that these leaders would prioritise the well-being of those living in poverty, many of whom are already suffering from multiple crises, including climate change. We pray for courageous decisions to set in motion significant action to create a greener, fairer future for everyone.

Amen

Saturday 12 June: Pray for young climate activists

Father God, we thank you for the bold young people across the world speaking out about the climate crisis and injustice. We pray for the Young Christian Climate Network as they begin their relay in Cornwall this weekend taking them all the way to COP26 in Glasgow this November. We pray for your blessing and protection over all those walking, hosting and volunteering. May every generation in the church work together to represent your passion for justice and restoration.

Amen

Sunday 13 June: Please pray for next steps

Lord, we pray for the discussions on this final day of the G7 summit. We pray for bold, practical commitments to tackle climate change and injustice as we rebuild from the pandemic. Lord, we know there will still be much more to be done. We pray for leaders to build on the decisions made, increasing their ambition and turning talk into swift action. We pray again for humility, compassion and collaboration in the important months ahead as we look to the global climate talks in November. May we represent you well as we continue to call for a fairer world.

Amen
