When faced with a crisis like the conflict in Ukraine, it can be hard to know how to pray. But the desire to pray itself is a great place to start. This guide is divided into two sections: the first giving you suggestions about what to pray for, and the second providing different creative prayer ideas for you and your church, group or family to use.
What to pray for…
There are five areas we can focus our prayers on: for people affected by the conflict, for those in leadership positions, for God’s power and love to be revealed through the church, for the wider global impact, and for peace.
Pray for people affected by the conflict
- For healing for people who are wounded or have experienced trauma and comfort for those who are grieving.
- That people living in Ukraine can access warm spaces throughout the winter. Pray that the gas and electricity infrastructure that has been damaged by shelling can be repaired so that people can heat their homes.
- Brothers, children and husbands of many partner staff have been drafted into the army. Quite a few of them are in dangerous positions on the front line. Please pray that God will keep them alive and well and give strength to their families to get through these difficult circumstances.
- For God's guidance for the post-traumatic stress disorder rehabilitation centre that our partners want to open. Pray that they will find trauma specialists and the resources to make this happen so that people who have been traumatised can get the best care.
Pray for those in positions of leadership
- That leaders on both sides will be filled with compassion, wisdom, calm and a desire for peace.
- That world leaders will balance responding to the conflict situation with seeking ways to build bridges, de-escalate tensions, and restore global security.
Pray for the church and our partners
- Express gratitude to God for the powerful work through the church in Ukraine of healing trauma, providing basic necessities, and making life better for people in harsh circumstances.
- For our local partners to continue their ministry despite all the challenges of war. Pray they will contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine by training pastors, counsellors and other leaders who serve people.
- The front line is very close to where one of our partners is based. Pray that if they are forced to leave because of the conflict, that God will open the doors and show them where to set up their work.
- That churches are a unified family, and for wisdom for them to know how to serve people who may not have anything in common with themselves.
- Tensions exist in Ukrainian society because of the differing degrees of hardship and suffering that people have endured. Please pray that the church can help reconcile these tensions.
- That the church can help people unite around their shared love for Ukraine and their desire for peace, despite their different experiences. Pray that the church can rebuild the bonds of trust and understanding that have been broken.
Pray for the global impact
- The crisis in Ukraine has led to a significant rise in the price of food and fuel. Economically poorer countries are disproportionately affected by shocks such as this. Pray that food and fuel prices will stabilise, and that provision will be made for countries in a vulnerable position.
Pray for peace
- That there will be an immediate end to the conflict.
- That people who have fled will be able to return home, and that what has been destroyed will be rebuilt.
- For strength for individuals and organisations in Ukraine, Russia and the region who are working for peace at local, national and regional levels.
- For the peace negotiations and deal-making that is widely expected to take place with the new US administration. Pray that the human cost of war would outweigh the desire for victory, territories or political scores.
