Aya’s story: rising from the rubble

Aya shares her story of fleeing violence in her village in Iraq, and returning to rebuild her dreams.

Aya shares her story of fleeing violence in her village in Iraq, and returning to rebuild her dreams.

Aya is a confident and determined mother of two. Before the conflict, she had worked hard to achieve her dream: running a busy shop where she made and sold clothes. She was proud of her work, and of the home she and her husband Hassan had created for their family in Iraq. She loved her life. But everything changed in 2014.

Home and hope reduced to rubble

One group of fighters arrived at one side of the village, while opposing forces arrived at the other. Bombs fell, battles raged – and Aya’s community was stuck in the middle. She and Hassan fled with their family.

‘I was carrying my son… so any shell would hit me, instead of my child.’

When the family came home four years later, they found their house and shop reduced to rubble.

A lifeline in desperate times

The family put up a tent next to the wreckage of their home and set to work rebuilding, but with her business destroyed, they had no way to make any money. They couldn’t always afford food, and Aya felt like giving up. Yet hope was restored when Tearfund started offering cash grants to vulnerable families in the village.

Aya and her family’s home was reduced to rubble.

Christ’s love and the strength to rebuild

The grant was a lifeline for Aya. It has enabled her to start rebuilding the business that is her passion and livelihood.. Now that she has a source of income again, her family don’t have to go hungry. With a regular gift to Tearfund, you can help more people like Aya rise up from the rubble.
