Tearfund’s annual Big Quiz Night is back on October 7th 2023, and the charity is calling for churches across the country to join them in raising funds to help communities around the world lift themselves out of poverty.
CBeebies star and children’s author, Gemma Hunt, will be among the quizmasters, alongside British Olympic runner Daniel Rowden and award-winning chocolatier Will Torrent.
Gemma said: “Tearfund’s Big Quiz Night is the perfect excuse to gather friends and family together for some friendly competition, while raising funds to fight poverty and help some of the most vulnerable people around the world.”
Since 2018, the Big Quiz Night has raised over £1m to help end extreme poverty around the world. The annual quiz, organised by international Christian charity Tearfund, is an innovative fundraiser for churches and communities across the UK.
Tearfund provides ready-made quiz resources so that organisers have everything they need to hold the evening. The quiz pack includes questions suitable for all ages and teams, large or small, as well as social media assets and videos to engage quizzers.
“Our annual Big Quiz Night is a great opportunity to bring people together and put your knowledge to the test,” said Tearfund’s Head of Church and Supporter Engagement, Graeme McMeekin. “Now in its sixth year our supporters continue to walk with us and help some of the world’s most disadvantaged people. We want to help train churches across the world to work with the whole community. We help people identify and use the resources they already have to hand to achieve wide-ranging improvements to daily life and long-term wellbeing."
Money raised will play a part in ending extreme poverty and injustice in more than 50 countries around the world. For example, Pastor Ngendahimana from Burundi has seen first hand how Tearfund’s training for churches can transform whole communities.
In Pastor Ngendahimana’s parish most families were relying on growing their own crops for food and income but were struggling to meet their basic needs. People had to walk for miles to find clean water and the nearest medical centre was over three hours away.
"We were able to look at our community and the way we live with new eyes, we could see the main challenges and what we needed to focus on," said Pastor Ngendahimana.
Together, the community decided to build a health centre and install pipes to bring clean water to the neighbourhood. People also started small businesses and found new and sustainable ways to make money.
“This transformation is an answer to our prayers, it is the result of the training we had with Tearfund," said Pastor Ngendahimana.
