Where is Niger?

Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa

Our impact

Overview

Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, with one of the lowest literacy rates, and the majority of children do not complete secondary education. The health system is basic, disease is widespread and the desert climate causes drought and leaves people at risk of malnutrition and water-related illnesses because of shortages of food and safe drinking water.

Niger is also facing increased security concerns from various external threats, including insecurity in Libya, the conflict in Mali, and violent extremism in north-east Nigeria. These factors are driving many refugees into Niger.

Our work in Niger

Envisioning and equipping local churches

We are currently supporting 100 local churches to work with the people in their local community to solve problems and respond to development needs together. This involves supporting individuals to set up income-generating activities, providing young people with business skills, and training people in new farming methods to help them produce more food.

HIV support

Our HIV programme has enabled 40,000 people to have access to HIV testing alongside counselling and long-term support.

Disaster response

We respond quickly to disasters by distributing emergency food packages and essential items, and providing access to clean water and sanitation facilities. We also train and equip communities in disaster management so that they are prepared to respond in the future.

Please pray for Niger

    • Pray for our work with women and girls. Niger has the lowest education rate in the world – only 11 per cent of women over the age of 15 can read or write.
    • Ask God to bring peace and restoration to the country which is still extremely vulnerable to violence and insurgency.
    • Pray about the erratic weather following changes to the climate, that those farming the land will be able to adjust and survive.
