Our Reboot Campaign is all about building a better post-coronavirus world. In this blog series, we’re focusing on the steps we need to take to make this happen. The fourth step we’re calling on the UK government to take is ‘Recover’: act to ensure a global recovery creates a better world for people in poverty.
Even though we’re calling these Reboot ‘steps’, we know that building a better world won’t be simple or straightforward. To tackle big, complex issues such as climate change, racial injustice or extreme poverty, we need to embrace a whole new way of thinking (and doing).
In many ways, this pandemic has highlighted just how interdependent we all are. And it’s become clear that to build a better world, we can’t afford to concentrate only on our national interests.
Instead, we must rediscover and champion our common humanity. As Christians, we have a biblical imperative to see beyond human-made divisions. As Paul wrote in Galatians 3:28: ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’
If we are to truly love our global neighbours, we must change the big systems that are biased against people in poverty. And this means wading into the nitty-gritty of international policy and the way the global economy is structured.
This is why we’re urging the UK government to call for a redesign of the global economy so that it serves people and planet, uncoupling economic growth from environmental impact, and creating a sustainable future that works for everyone.
The step we’re calling on the UK government to take
In our Reboot Campaign, we’ve called this step ‘Recover’. Some of the specific ways the UK government could achieve the goals described above include:
- Prioritise support to developing countries to assist small businesses, especially female entrepreneurs.
- Push for G7 and G20 action to significantly increase corporate income taxes and clamp down on tax havens and loopholeslead by example in transitioning away from investing in fossil fuels globally and scaling up support for renewable energy.
Take a look at our policy paper for more details.
