How giving, praying and acting also changes us

In a world which pulls us in every direction, what does it mean to align with God's heart for the poor?

Romans 12:2 calls us to transformation: ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’

This is an inward change, shaped by God’s grace and Spirit, but it also requires action from us. Paul urges us not to settle for the world’s values but to realign our hearts and minds with God’s will.

At Tearfund, we embrace this call through three intentional responses: giving, praying and acting. These are not random words. They are biblical principles that enable us to help people around the world break free from extreme poverty and experience transformation. Let’s explore each in turn.

Giving

Giving is a tangible way to reflect God’s love and generosity. Financially supporting Tearfund’s work enables real, lasting transformation. Research from Local Church, Lasting Transformation 2023 reveals the power of investing in Tearfund’s Transforming Communities programme:

  • 90% of communities involved go on to improve or build critical infrastructure such as water points, schools and health clinics.
  • Every £1 given results in approximately £7 worth of social change and economic benefit within those communities.

Scripture emphasises the enduring power of generous giving. In 2 Corinthians 9:9, Paul writes: ‘They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.’

Paul’s encouragement to the Corinthian church is about shaping hearts toward generosity. Rejecting the self-focused patterns of this world and embracing the countercultural values of Christ’s kingdom.

Helen, a Tearfund supporter, reflects on how giving has shifted her perspective: ‘Connecting with Tearfund’s work reminds me that the world is bigger than what I perceive it to be, that I am not the most important person. It gives me the ability to be engaged, to participate with other people, and to contribute to change.’

Praying

Intercession is powerful. We are deeply grateful for the prayers of our supporters and have seen miraculous outcomes as a result.

One powerful example is the Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda in 2024, which had a fatality rate of up to 88 per cent. Tearfund reached out to supporters for prayer, and within weeks, the outbreak was contained, and within nine days, the last patient was discharged.

Prayer also transforms us. It is the way to draw close to God, feel his presence and have our character changed. When we pray, we can reflect on and give thanks for who God is. And as we fix our eyes on what concerns God, we will reflect him and display his image.

Julie, a Tearfund church rep and volunteer speaker, shares how prayer has transformed her faith: ‘Connecting with Tearfund has strengthened my personal faith significantly. Tearfund workers and their partners in the field constantly assure us that prayer works – it truly changes situations. That has really strengthened my prayer life.’

Acting

We know that God is a God of justice. Psalm 33:5 tells us, ‘The Lord loves righteousness and justice.’ And in Micah 6:8, we are instructed to ‘act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God’.

When we take action together, we are living out God’s call for justice. And together, our voices become stronger. Tearfund has seen this through campaigns such as Make Poverty History and the Rubbish Campaign on plastic waste, where collective advocacy has led to meaningful policy changes.

Jen Wilkin, in her book In His Image, explains: ‘Our communities and churches are filled with modern-day widows and orphans, sojourners and indigents... We should ensure justice for the oppressed, because to do so is to look like God.’

Helena, a Tearfund church representative, shares how learning about justice changed her heart: ‘Tearfund has helped me search the character of God and his heart for the poor. Years ago, even growing up as a believer, I didn’t have the heart for poor people. Now, I see this as God’s heart.’

A kingdom perspective

As we’ve seen, this journey is transformative. We see beyond the immediate and glimpse the bigger picture of God’s Kingdom. We learn that transformation isn’t just for those we serve through Tearfund – it’s for us too.

As Lachlan, a church leader, puts it ‘While we are a deprived community in some ways, Tearfund helps us see a global picture. We recognise how blessed we are and then let God bless others through us. Partnering with Tearfund helps us keep a wider kingdom view.’
