Sir Cliff Richard’s fond thank you to supporters on 50th anniversary of Tearfund fundraising concert
Sir Cliff Richard, the musician and long-time supporter of Christian international development charity Tearfund cannot believe today marks 50 years since his ‘In the Name of Jesus’ fundraising concert on 24th January 1975.
The veteran singer said: “It is amazing to think that it is 50 years to the day since I performed the ‘In the name of Jesus’ fundraising concert for Tearfund at the Royal Albert Hall on 24th January 1975.
"Not long before I had visited Bangladesh and witnessed the great need in the refugee camps there. Tearfund is still carrying out life-saving water, sanitation and hygiene work for refugees in Bangladesh fifty years on.
"One of the memorable songs I sang on stage that night was ‘Power to All Our Friends’, a duet with the gospel group Choralerna.
"Those words still mean so much today. It is friends and supporters like you that allow Tearfund’s invaluable work to happen.
"So, I want to say thank you and power to all you friends and supporters half a century on. Tearfund has grown, working in more than fifty countries around the world and is still transforming lives in the name of Jesus. Long may it continue to do so.”
Sir Cliff Richard’s support of Tearfund has spanned the decades. He became Vice-President of the charity – visiting projects in ten countries: Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Haiti, Cambodia, Brazil, Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bulgaria.
Sir Cliff has inspired a generation of Tearfund supporters and helped raise millions of pounds to support its work in some of the world's poorest communities. For further information go to www.tearfund.org.
