The story of Kralae Church is a powerful reminder of what the church can be: a light in the storm, a servant in times of suffering and a community that stands together to rebuild hope.

‘Preparing food boxes for flood victims was truly exhausting. Nearly 2,000 boxes were made in just two days. It took a tremendous amount of effort from everyone involved,’ shares Rattana Surakan, a member of Kralae Church.

‘Even after the distribution, we were caught in the rain on our way back. It was hard to see everyone walking home soaking wet. But, despite how tired we were, seeing the happiness and gratitude of those who received the food boxes made it all worthwhile. Their smiles and words of thanks were more than enough to lift our spirits.’

In the Prayamengrai district of Chiang Rai province, nestled in the northern hills of Thailand, Kralae Church has long served as a spiritual anchor and a center of care for its surrounding communities.

Recently, when severe flooding struck the area, the church became a lifeline for many.

Floods in Northern Thailand and the church as first responder

The floods affected three villages, leaving approximately 1,000 families facing hardship, with homes damaged, possessions lost and livelihoods disrupted.

In the midst of this devastation, Kralae Church responded swiftly and sacrificially, becoming a hub of relief and compassion.

Starting late at night on 26 June and continuing on until the next morning, 27 June, Chiang Rai Province faced a crisis situation due to continuous heavy rainfall which resulted in flash floods and sudden inundation in Phayamengrai and Wiang Chai districts. Many homes and agricultural areas were extensively damaged.

Food distribution, clean ups and emotional encouragement

Under the leadership of Pastor Shalom and with support from Tearfund’s local partner, Mekong Minority Foundation (MMF), the Kralae Church quickly mobilised to meet urgent needs. Church members prepared and delivered more than 2,000 boxes of cooked food, ensuring families had warm meals during a time when many had no access to food or safe cooking conditions.

As well as food distribution, church members also rolled up their sleeves to assist in community clean-up efforts, helping neighbours clear debris, clean homes and begin restoring their lives. This service has brought not only practical relief but also emotional and spiritual encouragement to so many people affected by the floods.

A coordinated response and the impact of Tearfund’s Transforming Communities

Government agencies also stepped in, providing dry food, essential supplies, and materials for house repairs. This collaboration between local authorities and the church demonstrates the power of coordinated response rooted in local leadership and compassion.

Kralae Church's effectiveness in responding to the flood was no accident. The church had been equipped through Tearfund’s Transforming Communities (CCT) process. Through this journey, leaders and members were empowered to understand community needs, mobilise local resources and respond holistically and biblically to crises.

Kralae Church reminds us that every church, no matter how small, can be a force for transformation. With vision, partnership and the love of Christ, we can all rise to be a light in times of crisis. May their example inspire more churches to embrace their calling and  to live it out with courage, compassion and action.

Pray for Northern Thailand

    • Thank God for Kralae Church and other local churches in Northern Thailand who have stepped up to provide for people facing flooding and loss. Pray for courage and strength to continue serving their communities.
    • Pray for all those impacted by the flooding. Ask God for comfort and provision for people who have lost homes or livelihoods.
    • Lift up churches taking part in the Transforming Communities training. Pray that they would be blessed and encouraged as they are mobilised to carry out their Christian calling to be salt and light in their communities.
