Overview

Thousands of people in Afghanistan lack access to essential services. Natural hazards and the effects of climate change further complicate the situation. The population finds it hard to recover from 40 years of conflicts. The freedoms of many are restricted, particularly women and girls, deepening disparities and pushing families into further hardship.

Our work in Afghanistan

Tearfund started its work in Afghanistan in 1971, helping communities to lift themselves out of poverty. Since then we’ve expanded our work with partners to respond to immediate humanitarian needs, while strengthening their ability to support people in need for the long term.

Our work with local partner organisations includes the following areas:

• Quickly assessing needs and finding gaps to ensure timely and effective aid to those who need it most.
• Emergency support through the distribution of cash, shelter, food supplies and hygiene kits to families affected by natural disasters.
• Improving food security by helping people start kitchen gardens, get job training, and raise livestock to generate income. Addressing mental health and psychosocial support needs through community awareness-raising and improving the quality of mental health services.
• Emergency water, sanitation and hygiene support through awareness raising, distributing hygiene kits and access to safe drinking water.
