Where is Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America

Our impact

Overview

Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Central America. The economy had been growing steadily until 2018, when social unrest led to a political and economic crisis. Nicaragua is currently facing an economic blockade by the US and the EU; various opposition leaders have been imprisoned; and humanitarian aid organisations are facing increasing limitations on their work.

In November 2020, Nicaragua was hit by Hurricanes Eta and Iota less than 2 weeks apart, which destroyed crop harvests and left thousands homeless.

As one of Latin America’s least developed countries, access to basic services, including healthcare and education, remain severely limited.

Our work in Nicaragua

Tearfund has been working in Nicaragua since 1972, providing humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of a massive earthquake which hit the country’s capital, Managua.

Today, we continue to work through church networks and local partner organisations to transform communities in a number of ways including:

  • Promoting sustainable development
  • Helping communities recover as quickly as possible from natural disasters
  • Training churches and their leaders to advocate for community needs in marginalised areas

Please pray for Nicaragua

    • Thank God that through the work of local church networks, vulnerable communities are better equipped to withstand the impact of any future disasters.
    • Pray that Tearfund and our local partners can continue working to equip and empower churches to respond to local needs and bring transformation to their communities.
    • Pray that marginalised individuals and communities will be able to gain access to the support they need, especially healthcare services.
    • Pray for our partners and the local church to have the wisdom and strength to respond in the most appropriate way to this new crisis the country is facing.
