Overview
Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Central America. The economy had been growing steadily until 2018, when social unrest led to a political and economic crisis. Nicaragua is currently facing an economic blockade by the US and the EU; various opposition leaders have been imprisoned; and humanitarian aid organisations are facing increasing limitations on their work.
In November 2020, Nicaragua was hit by Hurricanes Eta and Iota less than 2 weeks apart, which destroyed crop harvests and left thousands homeless.
As one of Latin America's least developed countries, access to basic services, including healthcare and education, remain severely limited.
