Together, we can make this Christmas count

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Born into uncertainty, he grew up to proclaim and demonstrate the good news of God’s kingdom. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, and showed us how to love our neighbour.

As followers of Jesus, we are invited to let that story shape how we live – to give and respond to our global neighbours as part of our worship.

The page features the text 'MAKE THIS CHRISTMAS COUNT' alongside a woman wearing a light, spotted headscarf. Below, it reads 'Church resource pack' and 'All you need to plan your Christmas service' with the Tearfund logo.

A resource to help you show love through action

Our free Christmas resource will help your church find practical expressions for your worship. Through the video, slides and prayers, you can follow Jesus’ love to our global neighbours in South Sudan, where mothers like Athok have fled air raids and violent fighting, doing everything to keep their children alive.

As you hear how Tearfund’s food assistance and the love of the local church supported Athok at her breaking point, let love lead your church to pray and act. Download your free resource today.

A mother desperate to survive

Athok was pregnant with twins when an air raid forced her to flee Jedida in Sudan. In the chaos, she became separated from her husband. She still doesn’t know whether he’s alive.

‘I ran until I lost my sandals, just so I could survive,’ she says. ‘The only thing that was on my mind was my safety and that of my children.’

After fleeing, Athok spent two weeks living beneath trees with no safe shelter. She later gave birth to twins in makeshift conditions, wrapping her newborn babies in pieces of a torn bedsheet.

Your church could help provide urgent food

Athok is now living in a settlement in Aweil, where another family is sharing their shelter with her. She has been receiving food assistance from Tearfund, which means she is able to eat and produce breastmilk for her babies.

‘At least now things are a bit better. My children are breastfeeding and they have gained weight. At least now we can eat three times a day. Breakfast, lunch and supper.’

She also found belonging through a small church in the settlement camp, started by Pastor William. ‘After we opened the church, we began to see good things as people continued to pray,’ he says. ‘It is through God’s teaching that we have come together.’

But life remains precarious. So many families like Athok’s still urgently need safe shelter, medical supplies, clothing and basic household items as they begin to rebuild their lives.

A gift from your church this Christmas could help provide vital food, medicine and emergency shelter to families like Athok’s fleeing conflict and disasters.
