On 4 July a leaked document revealed the UK Government could be set to break its £11.6 billion climate finance promise to vulnerable countries. This would be devastating for people living in poverty who are experiencing the worst impacts of the climate crisis.

Tearfund joined with other organisations in reacting to the leaked news through online petitions, press articles, a letter to the Prime Minister and a publicity stunt.

In response, the Government announced it would publish in September details of how it intends to meet its £11.6 billion promise. But we need to keep up the pressure to make sure it delivers for people in poverty.

In the meantime, Rishi Sunak has shown himself to be backtracking on environmental issues, and the leader of the opposition, Keir Starmer, is indicating that the Labour Party could also be hesitating in its support for climate finance.

What can I do?

We now have a chance to put our faith into action and create more public pressure to urge our political leaders to act boldly and hold the course on climate finance.

Here’s how:

  • Email your MP asking them to ensure the UK Government delivers on its climate finance pledge to vulnerable nations. Use this form to send a pre-written email that you can edit and personalise. Simply type in your postcode and our form will do the rest!
  • Share this page on social media and ask friends, family and your church to email their MP too.
  • Let us know if you hear back from your MP: email us on [email protected]
  • Pray that the UK Government keeps its climate finance pledge and delivers on its promises.
