Around the world, people who were already vulnerable are being pushed further into poverty because of things like Covid-19, the climate crisis, and conflict. Saddle up for an epic ride and raise funds to help bring help and hope to people living in extreme poverty.

This April, we’re hoping to raise £15,000. This could train 13,800 people in business and life skills, equipping them to lift themselves out of poverty

You will begin ‘Cycle the Coast’ at Portstewart Baptist Church. From there, you take in breathtaking coastal beauty, and finish your 80km ride through the countryside as you return to Portstewart. Or, if that sounds daunting, you can choose a shorter 50km route

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, an active two-wheel commuter or a relatively new pedal-pusher, there’s a place for you.

The power of a bicycle

Gilbert lives in eastern Rwanda. Gilbert's early years were marked by a difficult living situation involving a lot of violence, causing him to leave when he was only 8 years old.

‘I didn't have anywhere to sleep. I spent seven years in that life. I had to steal food to survive,’ recalls Gilbert, from eastern Rwanda.

With a particular interest in choir music, Gilbert decided he wanted to visit his local church, which turned out to be one of Tearfund’s partners in the area.

‘I came to the church and was welcomed.’
Gilbert

Gilbert quickly found a home there. ‘The church was like a family,’ he says. ‘They were standing in the gap of the family I could have had.’

Through a self-help group they ran, the church provided Gilbert with both business and life skills which helped turn his life around; someone from the church even gave him a bicycle, which he committed to repaying the cost of within six months. Gilbert received all that he needed to start a small business and so he was able to establish a taxi cooperative and now, thanks to the support of the self-help group, Glibert is a husband and a father, able to keep his family fed and safe.

Every £215 raised could train 10 self-help groups of 20 people like Gilbert in business and life skills, equipping them to lift themselves out of poverty.

So sign-up to put your efforts behind the cause and enjoy a great day.
