At Tearfund, we believe that poverty isn’t God’s plan: but that you are. And this year, we’re asking you to get on your bike to help raise funds for people living in poverty around the world.

This June, we’re hoping to raise £15,000. This could train 12,000 people in business and life skills, equipping them to lift them to lift themselves out of poverty.

You will begin ‘Cycle the Coast’ at Portstewart Baptist Church. From there, you take in breathtaking coastal beauty that you won’t find anywhere else, and finish your 85km ride through the countryside as you return to Portstewart. Or, if that sounds daunting, you can choose a shorter 55km route.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, an active two-wheel commuter or a relatively new pedal-pusher, there’s a place for you.

Stronger together

Leonille used to feel lonely and helpless. Living with disabilities, she struggled to find work and felt excluded from society. Tearfund’s partner encouraged Leonille to set up a self-help group in her community. They met weekly, receiving training so they could start businesses, and encouraging each other. ‘We complement each other depending on abilities and disabilities’, Leonille said. Some members now own animals such as goats or chickens, passing on their offspring to others - and many have started new small businesses making jewellery, handbags or knitted items.

Churches can often reach people who have been excluded and marginalised because of poverty and stigma - that’s why we love working through local church partners! It is through finding community that people can find solidarity, friendship and support to help them overcome their problems, in the name of Jesus.

Our cycling can make a difference to people living in poverty, because we are stronger together.

Every £200 raised could train eight self-help groups of 20 people like Leonille in business and life skills, equipping them to lift themselves out of poverty.

So sign-up to put your efforts behind the cause and enjoy a great day.
