Why we pray for people in poverty
As the stadium lights go up in Glasgow for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the eyes of the world are watching elite athletes compete, pushing their limits and celebrating community.
But as a global church family, we know that away from the spotlight, millions of people do not start life on an equal footing. Extreme poverty, fuelled by conflict, climate disasters and deep-seated injustice, means many face an uphill climb just for the very basics – clean water, regular food and safety.
Extreme poverty is unrelenting, but it does not extinguish hope. At Tearfund, we refuse to accept lives being destroyed by extreme poverty. We are committed for the long run, equipping and enabling people as they take control of their own lives so they can move beyond everyday survival and lift their communities out of poverty, for good.
Partnering with 24-7 Prayer Scotland
We are incredibly excited to announce that our Commonwealth Prayer Relay resource has been created in partnership with 24-7 Prayer Scotland.
Together, we have built a powerful 11-day prayer journey to unite churches, small groups and individuals across Scotland in a single, focused baton-relay of prayer. As athletes compete on the track in Glasgow, we will be passing the baton of prayer across 11 Commonwealth nations where communities are facing massive global challenges, but where God is on the move.
