You can play your part to end extreme poverty

As the world’s elite athletes gather for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, to push at the limits of physical endurance, you too can step onto the track – to support our global family.

Extreme poverty robs millions of their potential. It means facing daily battles for basic survival – struggling to eat, to find clean water, and to stay safe from conflict and climate disaster. But at Tearfund, we are committed to help them in the long run. We follow where Jesus’ love leads. This means walking alongside marginalised communities over the long term, equipping them to unlock their own skills and build a better future.

This Commonwealth Games season, you can pick up the pace of lasting transformation. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or just looking for a fun summer challenge with your family or church, you can turn your energy into giving.

Four fun ways to fundraise this summer

  • In the Commonwealth Games, a single baton is passed from person to person across 74 nations to reach the finish line. You can recreate this amazing team journey with your friends, family or church youth group! How to play:

    • Pick a total distance target for the 11 days of the Games – maybe 11 miles or 22 miles.
    • You could run, walk or swim, but instead of doing it all yourself, one person covers the first mile, ‘passes the baton’ (tags the next person on WhatsApp or social media), and they then take over.
    • Keep passing it along until your team smashes the goal together!

  • If running isn't your pace, set a hard-hitting daily step goal or a long-distance walking target for the duration of the competition. It’s a brilliant way for individuals, families or small groups to rack up miles together to support our work to transform communities around the world.

  • Get your community, family or summer holiday club together for an ‘alternative sports day’. Think egg-and-spoon races, three-legged sprints or hula-hoop marathons. Charge an entry fee, sell some refreshments, and celebrate community spirit while raising funds to help people lift themselves out of extreme poverty.

  • If physical challenges aren't your thing, you can still participate! Host a summer BBQ, a coffee morning or a post-church lunch themed around ‘A taste of the Commonwealth’. Serve up dishes, bakes or drinks inspired by the 11 nations we are highlighting in our prayer relay, and ask guests for a donation to support Tearfund’s work.

Where will love lead you this summer?

However you decide to fundraise, we want you to know that every step you take helps change lives:

  • £24 could provide hygiene education and help a family access clean, safe drinking water.
  • £46 could help equip an individual with the practical farming or business skills needed to move out of poverty for good.
  • £90 could help a community build an action plan to construct local health clinics or clean water systems.

How to set up your JustGiving page

Setting up a digital fundraising page is the quickest and easiest way to collect donations from friends, family and church members:

  1. Go to JustGiving.com and click 'Start fundraising'.
  2. Select Tearfund as your chosen charity.
  3. Choose 'Doing an event' or 'Personal challenge' and follow the simple steps to set up your page.
  4. Be sure to mention your Commonwealth challenge and share your link on social media and WhatsApp!

Every donation made to your page comes directly to Tearfund, completely securely, so you can focus entirely on your challenge.

Bring the stadium noise on social media

Behind every great team is a home crowd cheering them on, and we want to be yours! Whatever you do this summer, don't keep your plans a secret. Let us know what kind of challenge you are taking on so we can shout our support from the sidelines!

When you are out there, picking up the pace, make some noise and tag Tearfund Scotland on social media. Share your updates and photos so the whole community can celebrate together and show the world what happens when we go the distance for global change!
