The International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. It’s a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire. Never has our world needed peace more. This week, as we approach the Day of Peace, give thanks for how God is bringing reconciliation through his people in Burundi.

Sunday 15 September

Marie’s life in Burundi had been scarred by violence and turmoil. Witnessing the horrors of the 1972 and 1993 crises, and even experiencing unjust imprisonment, left her with deep wounds and anger. Marie is among many in Burundi who have suffered from past conflicts. Pray for God to bring deep reconciliation and healing in Burundi.

Monday 16 September

A transformative project offered through our local partner gave Marie and others a chance to face their pain and trauma. Through workshops, teaching and the work of the Holy Spirit, Marie can now say, ‘Forgiveness is a gate to peace... From the teachings, I feel the vocation of teaching others about forgiveness.’ Thank God for this breakthrough.

Tuesday 17 September

Forgiveness took root in Marie’s heart. She reckoned with the injustice of being imprisoned without trial and understood the power of giving her pain to Jesus who bore it on the cross. This new-found strength allowed her to forgive even her jailor. Pray that this act of forgiveness would inspire many more.

Wednesday 18 September

The transformation wasn't limited to Marie. The project that started her on her journey towards forgiveness fostered understanding and compassion within the wider community. Former enemies now share water fountains and celebrate together. ‘Even when I meet my jailor, I greet him first.’ Praise God that he brings healing and hope to the hurt and grieved.

Thursday 19 September

Our partners in Burundi organise workshops to equip faith leaders with skills that build community relationships. They share knowledge in conflict resolution, reconciliation and the importance of democracy. Pray that churches will continue to play a significant role in ensuring calm and peaceful elections in the country.

Friday 20 September

Pastor Ndayizigamiye says, ‘I believe that church leaders should be present in everyday life, engage and invest in peaceful processes in their country.’ Pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to embolden Pastor Ndayizigamiye and his congregation as they promote a message of peace in their community and nation.

Saturday 21 September

‘We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.’ (2 Corinthians 5:20)

This verse reminds us that peace is possible because of Jesus and his sacrificial death on the cross. As ambassadors of Christ's love, God's people are a channel for true peace. Today, reflect on the ministry of reconciliation that God has given you.
