Around 3 billion people globally have no means to get rid of their waste safely. Give thanks to God this week for how Tearfund supporters and UK Aid Match funding are making a difference in the lives of people in Pakistan and Haiti and helping create cleaner, greener communities.

Sunday 1 December

In Pakistan, £2 million of the UK Aid Match funding received following Tearfund’s 2019 Lent Appeal helped to set up two Haryali hubs (waste management hubs) in Karachi. Praise God that they are creating a cleaner environment for people like Zareen and her family, preventing diseases which thrive when waste isn’t properly dealt with and providing much-needed jobs for many in deprived communities.

Monday 2 December

Zareen is now playing a crucial role in improving the health and environment of her community. She says ‘There is a positive change in my life after joining the hub as a segregator... I have started to live a balanced life and am happy to spend time with my children.’ Pray that the success of this work will inspire more waste- collecting initiatives.

Tuesday 3 December

In Pakistan, 42,822 people from 24,000 households were reached directly with essential messages about the dangerous impact of poor waste management on people’s health. Many more people were reached indirectly with this information through community activities. Pray that this message would spread even further to impact even more lives.

Wednesday 4 December

The local government has agreed to take over the Haryali hubs after the project period ends and keep them running. Thank God for the willingness of political leaders to take ownership of this enterprise and pray for continued commitment over the years for truly sustainable change.

Thursday 5 December

Tearfund’s local partners used the remaining £1 million of UK Aid Match funding in Haiti. Haiti has suffered from extremely challenging political and security issues over the years, and reports of gang violence and political instability have hit headlines this year. Pray for an end to the violence and ask God to bring security and stability to the country.

Friday 6 December

Long-term development issues in Haiti, including proper waste management, affect people's lives and wellbeing. Our local partner ran training in 34 local schools to help students understand the risks of poor waste management and how these risks can be avoided. Pray that the children would share their training with others to see more positive changes in their communities.

Saturday 7 December

‘I have learnt all of this thanks to Tearfund. Now, I want to share all the information with other people. Today, I see myself as a responsible person who has knowledge,’ says 17-year-old Ader Joseph, one of the students involved in the training. Praise God that he’s now an eco-ambassador in his community.
