Christmas is often described as a time of ‘peace and good will to all’. These words are taken from the praises of the heavenly hosts, jubilantly telling of the birth of Jesus: ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests’ (Luke 2:14).
But it’s hard to look at the world today, with many countries in conflict and the earth and its inhabitants suffering the effects of the climate crisis, and express great joy. The apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans encourages the followers of Jesus to be ‘joyful in hope’ (Romans 12:12). At that time, the early church faced persistent persecution. That’s why in the same verse, Paul also urged the Roman Christians to be ‘patient in affliction’. And also ‘faithful in prayer’.
For the next week, as we reflect on Jesus’ birth, be faithful in prayer as we see how hope is described and encouraged throughout the Bible. And even as many people worldwide face affliction, as Christians we should always be joyful and proclaim and demonstrate the hope we have in Jesus. May you also receive a fresh sense of hope this Christmas.
Sunday 22 December
‘Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.’ (1 Peter 1:13)
Jesus, as we approach the day that we celebrate your birth on earth, renew our minds so that our hope is refreshed and restored. Amen.
Monday 23 December
‘To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.’ (Colossians 1:27)
Lord Jesus, help us to remember that you came to be with us and to change us to be more Christ-like. Remind us of the glorious hope that we have in you. Amen.
Christmas Eve 24 December
‘But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish.’ (Psalm 9:18)
Father God, as we approach Christmas day when many presents will be exchanged, we pray a blessing over people in greatest need across the world. Amen.
Christmas Day 25 December
‘May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.’ (Psalm 33:22)
Immanuel, God with us, as we celebrate your birth today, thank you for your unending love expressed through your incarnation on earth. The only true hope is in you. Thank you, Jesus!
Thursday 26 December
‘You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.’ (Psalm 119:114)
Lord God, thank you that you rescue us and keep us safe. Please protect people across the world facing conflict and displacement. Give them hope even when the times seem hopeless. Amen.
Friday 27 December
‘But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love.’ (Psalm 33:18)
Father God, thank you that your gaze is always on those who fear and follow you. Thank you that your love never fails and we can put our trust in you. Amen.
Saturday 28 December
‘As for me, I shall always have hope; I will praise you more and more.’ (Psalm 71:14)
Lord God, thank you for this reminder that, in every circumstance, we must always have hope. And a real, unfailing hope because of Jesus. Help us to praise you more, this day and every day. Amen.
