Alcohol and drug abuse, poverty, broken relationships, gender-based violence and hopelessness are some of the challenges facing Kenya today. But the Tearfund Kenya team holds firmly to Jeremiah 29:11 as they pray for the future of their country. Let’s stand with them in prayer this week.

Sunday 22 June

‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ (Jeremiah 29:11)

As we begin this week of prayer for Kenya, ask God to remind you of his power at work.

Monday 23 June

Alcohol brewed in home environments, using locally available materials, accounts for 60 per cent of alcohol drunk in Kenya. Due to unsafe and unregulated brewing conditions, illicit brews can cause death, addiction, violent crime and family breakdown. Today, let us commit these issues to God and pray for radical intervention from Tearfund’s partners.

Tuesday 24 June

Bethroser took part in Tearfund’s Transforming Communities training in 2012, which encouraged her to bring all the elders in her locality together. ‘The villages are scattered far and wide, but I was now able to reach every corner,’ she says. In 2021, Bethroser was appointed chief of all the villages in Ngaru, Kenya. Praise God that her leadership and dedication are bringing significant transformation to her community.

Wednesday 25 June

In her role as chief, Bethroser has a vision to transform Kenya one location at a time. Through the Tearfund training she learnt that, ‘Resources are within if we look hard,’ says Bethroser. ‘That is the gospel that I have been preaching to my village elders and to the community members.’ Lord, you raise up the right people at the right time. Lead Bethroser in her work today. Amen.

Thursday 26 June

Chief Bethroser took a bold stand against illicit brew. Collaborating with village elders and security agencies, she led successful campaigns against the brew known as Macabo. ‘We began working together as a team,’ explains Bethroser, ‘and encouraging people how to live better than they were.’ Lord, we pray for lasting change in people’s hearts and minds. Amen.

Friday 27 June

Today, let’s speak a prayer of protection over Bethroser. Lord, we lift Bethroser to you. Thank you for her courage to stand against gangs and business people who grow rich from selling illicit alcohol to communities. As she influences the systems from within, we ask for your protection to cover her. Amen.

Saturday 28 June

Tearfund Kenya is trusting God to bring more volunteers into their work, helping them to reach communities with the gospel in practical ways. Lord, we pray for more people like Bethroser to be trained, individuals who have a passion for seeing transformation across their communities. Amen.
