Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, with high levels of poverty and inequality. The country faces many challenges, including political instability, climate-induced extreme events, economic hardship and security threats. This week, pray for Tearfund staff and our partners working in challenging conditions.
Sunday 17 August
Violence has plagued Mozambique since the country’s disputed elections in October last year. With killings and looting across the country, thousands have fled over the borders, desperately seeking safety in neighbouring Malawi and Eswatini. Pray that all those seeking refuge will find safety.
Monday 18 August
More than 5 million people in neighbouring Malawi already require humanitarian support due to the drought. An influx of thousands of people from Mozambique needing shelter, food, water and medical provision is placing further pressure on already stretched resources. Pray for the Tearfund team in Malawi responding to this dual crisis.
Tuesday 19 August
‘God has been faithful and granted protection to Tearfund’s team and partners,’ says Judas Massingue, who heads up Tearfund’s work in Mozambique. ‘Please join us as we continue to pray for Mozambique and for all those affected.’ Pray for continued safety of Tearfund staff and partners.
Wednesday 20 August
In response to the political crisis and the resulting unrest, the Christian Council of Mozambique and the Mozambique Evangelical Association have actively promoted peace and called for an end to the violence. ‘We pray for God to continue to work through his church in Mozambique to build peace and reconciliation in the upcoming months and years,’ says Judas.
Thursday 21 August
Cyclone Chido made landfall in Mozambique on 15 December last year, followed by Cyclone Dikeledi in January 2025, leaving 125 people dead, more than 680,000 in need of humanitarian assistance and over 120,000 homes destroyed. Pray for communities still recovering from the devastation as they rebuild their homes and restart shops and businesses.
Friday 22 August
‘As the country prepared for the storm to make landfall, Tearfund and local partners worked with local churches to get vital messages to people in their communities on what to do before and during the storm to stay safe,’ says Judas. Give thanks for the many families who were protected from the cyclone as a result.

God of peace, bless the people of Mozambique. Guide their leaders with wisdom and courage. Heal the wounds of violence and division. Bring prosperity and hope to all. Amen.
