Nigeria is a nation filled with diverse resources and potential, but the reality for millions is a daily struggle for survival. The recent increase in fuel prices has pushed many low-income families deeper into poverty. The cost of transportation, food and essential goods has skyrocketed, leaving many unable to afford the basics. This week, pray that the country’s rich resources will benefit everyone.

Sunday 24 August

Nigeria as a country is facing political challenges and many economic setbacks. Pray for stability in the economy of Nigeria and for divine intervention in the unstable political situations to enable Tearfund to better carry out its life-changing work releasing people from poverty.

Monday 25 August

‘Things are getting difficult daily for Nigerians and people always turn to the church,’ says Pastor Oluleke Akinola from Upper Room Baptist Church in Ibadan. Give thanks that many Nigerians facing difficulties are looking to their local churches for support. And ask that God will equip churches with training and resources to respond.

Tuesday 26 August

Obi Abanikanda is a 43-year- old widow and mother living in Ibadan. Her husband passed away eight years ago, leaving Obi to raise their six children alone. ‘After all that happened, I didn’t know where to turn.’ Lift up the many families, like Obi’s, who are struggling in Nigeria.

Wednesday 27 August

Obi was encouraged by her church pastor to join a Tearfund Transforming Communities programme, where – through Bible study – her eyes were opened to the resources she had around her. ‘I’m so grateful to Transforming Communities. It has made sure we are never hungry,’ she says. Pray that more churches in Nigeria start Transforming Communities training programmes.

Thursday 28 August

‘I am optimistic about life and ready to face whatever challenges I will face in life, with a positive mindset knowing that God will never forsake me,’ says Patience who was defrauded and left with debts, leading her to attempt suicide, but was saved through Transforming Communities training. Give thanks for how the local church is giving people practical skills to restore hope and dignity.

Friday 29 August

The Tearfund team in Nigeria is seeking new partner organisations to collaborate with to help reach more churches through Transforming Communities. The team asks you to pray that ‘the will of God will prevail in the selection process and for God to give us wisdom to choose the right partner organisations’.

Saturday 30 August

Join in prayer with Ben Osawe from Tearfund’s team in Nigeria: ‘I pray that peace will reign, farmers can go to their farms and continue with their business. And that the current high food prices, food crisis, hunger and deepening poverty will be overcome.’ Amen.
