In September last year, three major earthquakes struck eastern Afghanistan, leaving more than 2,200 people dead and thousands injured. The disaster hit communities already facing extreme hardship. Tearfund’s local partner is continuing to respond, bringing vital relief to families.
Sunday 25 January
The earthquakes shook violently, bringing entire villages to rubble. Many people, like Ahmad, lost family members and their homes in an instant. Pray for families who are still living through unimaginable trauma. Ask God to comfort them in their grief and protect them from further harm.
Monday 26 January
Tearfund’s local partner quickly set out to reach people in remote, mountainous areas where roads have been damaged or blocked by landslides. Pray for the physical and emotional endurance of the relief teams as they continue to navigate difficult terrain to reach affected communities.
Tuesday 27 January
The relief effort is focused on providing cash assistance for health support, food, water and emergency shelter. Pray for the effective distribution of this aid to the 961 families being supported. Ask that families in greatest need receive the support essential for their survival.
Wednesday 28 January
Even before the earthquakes, communities were under immense pressure, facing drought and hunger. The disaster has pushed many to the brink, with people like Karim saying, ‘Everything has gone, we will start from nothing in the future.’ Pray for those who have lost their livelihoods and businesses.
Thursday 29 January
After the earthquakes, Solomon Cornelius, Tearfund’s Country Director for Afghanistan, shared that each day brought ‘new misery’ for the affected people, who were in deep shock. Pray for Solomon and the Tearfund team as they manage the response to such overwhelming needs. Ask for God’s wisdom and strength to guide them in their decisions and to sustain them emotionally and spiritually.
Friday 30 January
The earthquakes left many people with a heightened sense of vulnerability and fear, with many still scared of more tremors. Pray for peace and healing for those affected. Ask for protection against future tremors and for long-term support for people to rebuild their lives and communities.
Saturday 31 January

Give thanks for all those who prayed and donated. Thank God for the comfort and support brought to people in their time of greatest need.
